Celebrities and Their Antique Treasures
When it comes to celebrities, many of us have an innate curiosity about what they wear and buy. But did you know that not every famous star surrounds themselves with purchases from posh designers like Dolce & Gabbana and Chanel? Some choose to invest their hard earned dollars in vintage and antique pieces. Furthermore, a recent celebrity’s antique purchase even caused quite the stir across the pond.
American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson bought the gold-and-turquoise ring, once owned by author Jane Austen, at auction last year for just over 150,000 pounds ($228,000). Now, the British government has stepped in to stop the singer from taking the ring out of the country. Their hope is to keep the ring on public display in the United Kingdom (UK).
Ranging from antique dolls to first edition books, vintage clothing to manual typewriters, celebrities are known to collect a wide range of items. Here’s a list of famous stars favorites:
A-list actresses Whoopi Goldberg, Diane Keaton and Lily Tomlin are reported to collect Bakelite jewelry. Unlike typical gold and silver jewelry pieces, Bakelite is a moldable plastic that was invented by Leo Bakeland in 1909. Bakelite jewelry, which was popular in the 1920s and 30s, is known for its bright colors and can be quite pricey. Tomlin wore various Bakelite jewelry pieces for her recurring role on The West Wing.
Antique & Collectible Dolls
Dolls are not just for little girls anymore – they’re now widely collected across the globe. Celebrities such as Demi Moore, Morgan Fairchild, Marie Osmond and Richard Simmons share this passion. Courtney Love is rumored to have a collection of Mattel’s Liddle Kiddles dolls from the 1960s. Osmond’s passion for dolls outshined her personal collection in 1991 when she debuted her doll line on QVC. Today, she sells her dolls worldwide.
In between writing, directing and making cameos in his blockbuster hit movies, Quentin Tarantino enjoys playing and collecting games, specifically board games. And with the vast array of vintage board games available on the market, from Victorian to 1960s television show themed, who wouldn’t want to take a look at his collection?
Many celebrities collect antique pieces solely for investment purposes and artwork is the singular most popular. Madonna and Sylvester Stallone are lovers of art. According to LifeStyle Home, Madonna reportedly has a vast collection of paintings that includes a Picasso she purchased in 1990 for one million dollars. Phantom of the Opera Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber also has one of the greatest collections of pre-Raphaelite paintings in the UK.
Some stars choose to enrich their personal style with vintage pieces from their own collection. Lea Thompson, Jane Seymour and Demi Moore (again!) are said to have a closet full. Canadian crooner Celine Dion also collects high heels. She has more than 1,000 pairs!
It’s not very surprising that Dr. Frasier Crane himself, Kelsey Grammer, is a noted book enthusiast. Grammer collects first edition rare books and actually reads them! His favorite books in his collection include ones authored by William Butler Yeats and Robert Burns. Sarah Michelle Geller is also a fan of first edition books.
