An Antiques Expert’s Story: April Matteini
For a third consecutive year, The Original Miami Beach Show is excited to present Appraisal Day on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 12-6 p.m. All attendees, with a valid ticket to the show, are invited to bring one item – be that a treasure or family heirloom – to be appraised by an antiques expert.
At this year’s show, this exclusive event will be sponsored by Skinner, Inc., an internationally recognized auction house that hosts more than 60 auctions annually. In honor of our partnership with Skinner Inc., I had the opportunity to speak with the company’s regional director for Florida and appraiser, April Matteini, about her background and what she’s looking forward to at the 2014 Appraisal Day.
For just over two decades, Matteini has made evaluating and consulting a range of material, from individual pieces of fine jewelry to entire estates, an integral part of her career. Today, she provides appraisal services and manages client relations with individuals, fiduciaries, not-for-profit organizations, and museums across Florida and the Southeastern United States.
From the beginning, Matteini always had an interest in antiques. In college, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Saint Lawrence University in New York. She then continued her studies across the pond in Florence, Italy attending the Corso di Antiquariato e Mercatistica, a professional program in antiques and marketing. Finding a love for all things gemstone and jewelry related, Matteini was motivated to further her knowledge by acquiring a Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in 2000.
Throughout her career, she has held numerous positions in the appraising industry including roles as an Antique Jewelry Specialist for J. & S.S. De Young, Inc., as the Assistant to the Director of the Fine Jewelry Department at Skinner, Inc. as well as founding her own firm: A. Matteini & Co, LLC. However, Matteini’s favorite part of being an appraiser has always centered on the relationships she builds with her clients. “I really enjoy speaking with people about their family history and helping them place value on the pieces they own. I love educating them about the history of their treasured items,” she says.
Matteini also goes on to say that she adores the fact that these pieces hold so much meaning for their owners. “There’s so much sentimental attachment with the pieces I appraise, so it especially rewarding when I can tell someone that a piece they love has high monetary value.”
Looking towards The Original Miami Beach Antique Show and Appraisal Day, Matteini is excited to be part of this year’s event. “The show has really become a winter tradition for not only people in the antiques industry, but also for Floridians. I believe they enjoy attending the show annually.” She continues, “Appraisal Day is fantastic way to reach out the community at large and provide a great service.”
For those who plan to bring an item to be appraised, Matteini recommends bringing any information regarding the piece with you to Appraisal Day. “Supporting documentation, such as receipts, certificates, etc., is always valuable to have during an appraisal. It helps move it along and can provide additional background for appraiser when he or she is evaluating the item.”
Appraisal Day will be held on the second floor of the Miami Beach Convention Center in room D-234. Each appraiser will provide an unbiased, expert opinion of the attendee’s collectible or antique including a verbal estimated range of its fair market value. No written valuations will be given. Attendees are encouraged to sign up for an appointment at www.MiamiBeachAntiqueShow.com. Walk ups are also welcome, but an appointment guarantees the item will be seen by an appraiser.
