Top Red Carpet Gemstones of 2013
In 2013, the Hollywood elite made a statement on the red carpet and not just with their bold designer colored gowns, but also their jewels. Many celebs stepped out of their comfort zone experimenting with new jewelry trends that are now showcased in fashion magazines across the country.
In my opinion, however, the gemstones were the highlight at this year’s award shows and movie premieres. Emeralds, sapphires, rubies and opals have made a style comeback and the classic, diamonds, were adorned by the stars in a whole new way. Below are a few of looks I believe stood out from the crowd in 2013.
This year emeralds were not only the 2013 Pantone Color of the Year, but they’ve also been adorned by a plethora of celebrities on the red carpet, from Tina Fey to Julianne Moore. Two of my favorite looks combine another 2013 hot trend – reptile accessories.
Comedienne Anna Faris took a fun approach to fashion at the recent Emmy Awards. This celeb wore a 19th century emerald and diamond salamander brooch from Fred Leighton that gave her bright yellow Monique Lhuillier dress a pop of green color. Picture is from jewelsdujour.com and dayoldnews.com.
Mastering three hot trends in one: emeralds, reptile accessories and honoring the Year of Snake, Jessica Biel hit it out of the park with her emerald and diamond Bulgari serpent necklace. This piece perfectly complemented her silver Marchesa gown. Picture from Cannes Film Festival located on so-trendy.info.
Sapphires were also essential to completing many Hollywood’s A-listers’ looks. However, the stars made it their own by wearing both traditional blue sapphires as well as pink sapphires in a modern way.
Scarlett Johansson is a perfect example. She paired a Bulgari yellow gold necklace with pink and blue sapphires, emeralds and diamonds with a sexy Versace off-the-shoulder gown, making her the talk of the Venice International Film Festival. She also showed off her newest addition, a vintage Art Deco style engagement ring from her beau. Picture is from aceshowbiz.com.
Jessica Chastain commemorated the Queen of Jewels, Elizabeth Taylor, by donning the star’s sapphire and diamond sautoir at the Cannes Film Festival. The long necklace was originally bought for Taylor on her 40th birthday by then-husband Richard Burton. Picture is from dailymail.co.uk.
Rubies were the hidden gem on this year’s red carpet. They didn’t always take center stage, but they did make a statement. Here’s two original ways some of our favorite celebs sported rubies.
Mila Kunis wore unique African ruby earrings by Sutra to the world premiere of Walt Disney Pictures “Oz The Great and Powerful.” These earrings definitely stood out against Kunis’ cream colored Dolce & Gabbana dress and grabbed your attention. Picture is from hawtcelebs.com.
Red hot songstress Rihanna showed off her elegant side at this year’s Grammy Awards. Wearing an Azzedine Alaia gown, she adorned herself in an estimated $2 million worth of Neil Lane jewelry, including a platinum and ruby midi ring. Picture is from vibevixen.com.
From the runway to the red carpet, opals have been a new trend popping up everywhere. Here’s a couple way actresses used these gems to stand out.
At this year Academy Awards, Jennifer Hudson stunned in midnight blue shimmering mermaid-like Roberto Cavalli dress. She paired this gown with bold diamond and blue green opal earrings by Sutra to further accentuate the blue hue. Picture is from pricescope.com.
An expecting Busy Philipps added some boldness to her look at the SAG Awards with a one-of-a-kind Irene Neuwirth opal necklace. The Cougar Town actress’ necklace was 18K yellow gold with a mix mint chrysoprase, lightening ridge opals and diamonds. Picture is from thegemstandard.com.
Diamonds epitomize Hollywood glamour and are always showcased by celebrities during award season. These two Academy Award winning stars wore diamond necklaces that highlighted both their fronts and backs.
Best Actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence donned Chopard diamonds for her winning night. The actress looked gorgeous in a blush hued Dior Haute Couture gown with 12 carat diamond earrings, a 5 carat white diamond band, 18 carat floral diamond ring and a 74 carat opera length diamond necklace which she draped down her back. Fellow Oscar winner Anne Hathaway also accessorized with diamonds. In pale pink silk Prada gown, the “Les Miserables” actress completed her look with a $485,000 platinum vintage style floral diamond necklace by Tiffany & Co. She wore the necklace backwards for a distinct new look. Picture is from news.softpedia.com.
